Final Cut Improvements

We have noticed that Final Cut Pro 6 (part of Final Cut Studio 2.0), is much better at handling editing/capturing over a network. We haven't figured out why yet, but it seems related to improved buffering to better handle tcp hiccups (out of order packets etc).

I'm interested in what other people are seeing on this.

I'm also very excited about 10.5. We expect much better performance there.

A First Time for Everything

I got my first job in the computer industry 20 years ago.

Back then, I didn't have email. I would sometimes use my 1200 baud modem to get on various Atari bulletin boards to download games. I could store them on my single sided, 3.5" floppy drive.

Now I sit here writing my first blog entry. There's more unused disk space in my ipod than on all the SGI machines I ever had on my desk (combined).

One of the things I've always loved about the computer industry is that even though things continually change, the concepts, problems and configurations that people rely on never really do. They get bigger, they get faster, perhaps they get a little more complex, but nothing is such that it can't be broken down into a handful of simple analogies. I've always loved doing that for people. As someone (perhaps Einstein) once said, "you never really understand something until you can explain it to your grandmother".

Perhaps I can use this space to create some of those explanations and it'll help someone sort something out. One can only hope.
